lmao no it’s not and I’m going to explain why you think it is
1. You are reading Homestuck at a slower pace. Most fans started reading post-Cascade. That means that most fans had 5 acts of material to read in a rush. If you’re like me you didn’t take it slow, and you read as much as you could every day, trying to catch up. And when you did? Your pace was slowed down to a few pages every few days. This makes everything feel longer. You don’t get a few pages of a conversation; you get a whole week of it. Take Act 1, for example. Most of Act 1 was John fucking around in his house and trying to understand the game. The plot doesn’t truly thicken until its final flash. You probably read Act 1 in one or two days. But in reality? Act 1 started on 4/13 and ended on 6/7. That’s almost two months of John fucking around. If you had been reading that as it was released, you might have thought, “What the heck, Hussie? Where’s the plot?” just as you do when you think you are faced with too much shipping. In addition…
2. You are ignoring the plot and focusing on the shipping. Yeah, that’s right, you, the one angry that there’s not enough plot and too much shipping. You’re reading it wrong. It’s okay, sometimes I do too, but you have to read in between the lines. For example, remember this?

You might say “Yeah! When Hussie decided to mess around with Rose/Kanaya just to bother the shippers!” Tsk tsk. I guess you saw the shipping and ignored, oh, I don’t know, the fact that Rose was nervous to meet her mother so she emulated the vice she used to loathe.

Dirk and Jake broke up? No, Dirk opened up about some of his problems with self-expression. Gamzee and Terezi are together? No, Terezi’s insecurities are slowly destroying what she used to believe in. Shipping isn’t replacing the plot, it’s just that the plot and the characters’ growth has a little more shipping glaze on top than usual. Focusing only on the shipping might have to do with…
3. You are too involved in the fandom. Fandoms can be a bad thing sometimes. Not because they’re rude or mean, but because fandoms tend to exalt the happy, simple elements in media. It’s much easier to create fanfiction or fanart of characters smooching than it is to develop a complex theory about where the plot is heading. The fandom will focus on the shipping and post about it multiple times, making you feel like shipping is all there is.
Still not happy with the amount of romance in Homestuck? Take a step back. Avoid the over excited fans. Reread Act 6 and read it closely. You will find that there isn’t as much shipping as you remembered.
